It started with waste from the neighbouring factory. We took fringed selvedges from the waste sacks and used them as our starting point for these fringed cushions. A material which usually is thrown away, partly because it is considered too difficult to work with. But BOMA is the weaving mill which doesn’t say no in the first place. Daily Worklike-Activities in Kungsbacka helped us wind the selvedges into skeins. The mechanical looms at BOMA offer a wider freedom concerning which materials can be used as weft and by weaving in the round pillowcases can be produced directly on the loom. The result is a new weave from waste with a fringed surface. The colours in the pillow are determined by the colours which previously have been woven at Ekelunds, rendering each pillow unique.
DES&DO!
DES&DO! is initiated and run by SPOK Västra Götaland and FORM & folk with the purpose to promote collaborations and make visible the wealth of production and design that can be found in the Västra Götaland Region.
14 teams of designers and local manufacturers have been matched together to create an idea, a new product, a material or a concept. Read more about DES&DO! and all the teams and projects in the catalogue.

HORRED, BOMA & EKELUNDS
The small locality Horred is home to multiple weaving factories and situated in the Sjuhärad district, known as the Textile Kingdom. This is an area with a long and rich history of weaving and textile manufacturing, and it is here that the mill BOMA väveri, as well as the Ekelund linen mill are situated.
BOMA is a small mill with its roots in traditional Swedish handwoven rag rugs. The mill was later expanded with Swedish-built Texo mechanical looms built between 1930-1950. These robust machines in cast-iron, wood and leather are still used for weaving all of BOMA’s products. These looms are an older type, using shuttles (unlike more modern rapier-looms), and because of this, there are no selvedges being cut off, and it is possible to weave in the round, an advantage we have taken use of when weaving these pillowcases.
Ekelunds is one of the oldest mills in Sweden and a Purveyor to the Court. They work with high quality organic linen and cotton yarns. As with all rapier looms, as a necessity during production a selvedge is woven which is cut off the main fabric and is usually disregarded as waste. These long bands of fringe end up in large sacks, and it was this material which we wanted to do something with.
WITH THE HELP FROM DAILY WORKLIKE-ACTIVITIES

The selvedges come from the Ekelund factory in large sacks, unsorted and trassel. Before it can be possible to use these as a weft material, they need to be sorted and wound into skeins, a time- and labour intensive process.
In Sweden the Act on Support and Service to Certain Disabled Persons (LSS) gives people who don´t have the opportunity to work in the regular work environment, a possibility for daily occupation and the chance to be part of a context with Daily Worklike Activities.
We contacted Daily Worklike Activities in our neighbouring municipality Kungsbacka and were given the wonderful chance to collaborate with a group of people with diagnoses like autism or autism-like conditions. These collaborators have through their diligent and enthusiastic work helped us to unwind the chaotic selvedge mess and turn it into something which can be used in production.
