Part of IKEA’s thesis programme Disruptive Textiles
2022
Textiles are inherently changeable because they are soft and pliable. Rather than treating a weave as a static material, in this project the possibility of change within a textile is explored in the form of a specific weave structure.
With the help of floats, two or more layers of a weave were connected without being fixed in position. Because of this the textile is be woven with a built-in shift – by pulling at specific ends the layers move and change place, changing the pattern while they move.
The result is five textiles which change transparency, pattern, and in one case colour. They are meant to hang in a room, as a window blind regulating light, or a room divider shutting out or letting in the surrounding room.
A changeable weave can become an active member in a room, to be adjusted to the wish of the user or change with the shifting light of the day.
